Chinese rolled scrolls are beautiful vertical paper rolls where the artists create a composition with painting and calligraphy. The painting surface can be made either of paper or silk.

A Chinese rolled scroll usually has a thin wooden bar at the top, with a silk cord fastened for hanging. It also has a wooden cylindrical bar attached at the bottom to give the necessary weight to hang it properly onto a wall, and to help to roll up the scroll when the artwork is not in display. This bottom bar usually has two knobs decorated with jade, porcelain or ivory to ease the rolling of the scroll.

In the composition of a hanging scroll, the artist paints the foreground at the bottom of the scroll while the middle and far distances are at the middle and top respectively. Sometimes an inscription is written at the top, usually a short verse or a poem.

Ancient hanging scrolls were made to be display only for short periods of time according to the season or occasion; they were never intended to be on permanent display. When not in use, they rolled them up, tied them and secured them for storage.

Scrolls were the earliest form of literature in China. The oldest were found in an emperor’s tomb and they are more than 2,000 years old. These ancient scrolls were made on bamboo strips and silk banners.
