The history of the abacus con be traced more than 2,000 years back. We can’t imagine a world without numbers, but a long time ago numbers did not exist. Early humans used their fingers to count and when they had larger quantities, they probably used pebbles and twigs to help them count.

Trade and commerce created the need not only to count goods and money, but also to add, subtract and calculate larger quantities.

It is not clear when the first abacus was made in China, but it was probably during the 2nd century BC. It was built out of bamboo and beads; It could be held and carried around easily. Many other cultures used similar devices, but the Chinese abacus seems to be the oldest.
