Today we will talk about Art History for Kids: Giotto Biography and the Gothic Art. Gothic Art was mostly architectural and the most important painter of this period was Giotto di Bondone (1266/7 – January 8, 1337), but he is better known simply as Giotto.

Giotto was born in Florence, Italy and he is known as the father of modern painting. He was not only a painter, but also an architect.

He decorated chapels, churches, altars and other religious locations, showing realistic scenes from the life of Christ and the saints. He used a technique called “fresco,” where he painted in a wet plaster surface.

He used natural blue skies instead of the gold background commonly used before him. He also gave authentic color to his subjects’ clothing, hair and faces, instead of the “holy” colors used during the byzantine period.
