In today’s series of Leonardo da Vinci Biography for Kids: Inventions, we will learn how Leonardo da Vinci was not only a great artist, but also a great thinker and scientist. His restless mind always marveled at everything around him. Even today, five hundred years after he lived, his inventions still surprise us.

His restless mind always marveled at everything around him. Leonardo observed the weather: clouds, storms, lightning, how the moon controls the tides, etc. He studied the water and how it might use its power to move machinery.

Leonardo combined his artistic knowledge with his observations of nature, and he design machines that could replicate what he saw in nature. Leonardo divided his machines according to where they could be used: air, water or land. His mind never stopped, he was always asking questions.

Leonardo da Vinci didn’t have a formal education, so he didn’t have to learn from others, his ideas were new and many of them were against of the common knowledge of his time. He was always imaging how to improve his daily life, even when the basic materials he had, wood, fabric and leather limited him. Most of his machines were powered by water or by human force.
