Today we have another chapter in our series: Leonardo da Vinci Biography for Kids: Theatre Designer. When the Duke of Sforza hired Leonardo da Vinci to work for him in Milan, the Duke gave him the title of “the arbiter of all questions relating to beauty and elegance, especially in pageantry.”

During the 15th and 16th centuries, some of Italy’s finest painters and musicians were hired to organize theatre spectacles at court. Leonardo designed a revolving stage in 1490, for a theater spectacle during the wedding celebrations for the Duke ‘s nephew, in Milan.  He prepared the settings, masks, and costumes for “Festa del Paradiso.” It had a great golden globe surrounded by seven planets and the zodiac signs.

Leonardo also designed costumes for weddings, and plays, elaborate stage sets for theater, and decorations for the ballrooms. He himself wore purples, pinks and crimsons.

In 1495 he prepared the stage for another theatrical comedy Baldassare Taccone, with the theme of Jupiter and Danae. He built a stage where the sun rose, with sound, mercury flying down from mount Olympus with a pulley.
