Leonardo da Vinci was not only a great artist, but also a scientist and a tireless researcher. Today we will be exploring Leonardo da Vinci biography for kids: his childhood.

He didn’t leave any written information about his early years, but most historians think he had a pleasing life in his grandparent’s farm. He must had been a very curious child, and he had a whole world to explore near his hometown in the company of his young uncle Francesco.

Leonardo da Vinci was born in the town of Vinci in Italy in 1452, so his surname Vinci is not his last name, as we might think, but his hometown.

We don’t know much from his childhood, but if we were to be guided by his interests in adult life, surely we could think that he was a very curious child, who liked to draw and who was anxious to know how things worked.

His father wanted him to study law and to work abroad as a merchant representing the powerful families in Florence.

He didn’t receive a formal education, because his parents never married. He learned how to read and write, some basic math and music and later on his life he learned how to speak Italian (his mother language was a dialect) and some Latin.

For the thousands of pages he wrote as an adult and the amount of notes, drawings and diagrams he made, we know that he was fascinated by everything he saw around him.

This article is part of my series about Leonardo da Vinci where you will find information about his life, facts and anecdotes of his science and artistic activities and his inventions.
