The navigator is a thumbnail preview of your picture with a slider to adjust the zoom.  It lets you go from a full size image, all the way to the pixels.

It is very easy to use and you can have it in your screen and use it instead of the zoom tool. It shows the portion of the image that is visible inside a color box and you can move it around with your cursor.

The view box is red by default, but you can change it if you need to by going to the right upper corner and click in the arrow.

Then you will get a window where you choose: Panel options.

Now you will get a dropdown where you can choose a preset color or a custom option which will bring up the color picker.

If the navigator is not visible you can go to the menu bar: Window> Navigator and check the word Navigator.
